Bullying

I have been following the story of the bullying victim that fought back. It clearly has taken on a life of its own. We're now getting exclusives with each of the parties in the video. Experts are weighing in on the situation... the whole thing has gotten very big. My hope is that it might be a catalyst to some change taking place.

But when I read the reactions people have to this story, I really think that people miss the most important point... everybody involved is a victim! Each and every child, be they the bully or the bullied is a victim of being a teenager, and in a larger extent, being a member of our dog-eat-dog competitive society.

Reading comments on news sites has me questioning the level of empathy that people are capable of possessing. Sure, we've been caught up in the underdog nature of the story, but is it really healthy for people to be making comments such as "I've watched the interview on TV. It was obvious that the younger boy was lying." or Laughable!! That boy claiming that in actual fact he was the "victim". Typical bully, can dish it out, but can't take it." THIS IS A TWELVE YEAR OLD BOY!!!

Somehow we have to look at the bigger picture and ask ourselves the questions like "what causes Child X to bully Child Y" or even further back and say "What is it about our society that encourages us to be the best to the point that we bring down those around us in the process?"

No one is born a bully. Something caused them to become one. Until we start asking these questions and fixing whatever it is about our world that causes it to happen, nothing will ever change.
